Shakira Prevents Jail Time With Tax Fraud Settlement

The "Waka Waka" singer was charged with tax evasion in 2018 after an investigation found she dodged $13 million in taxes, according to The Guardian.

Investigators said Shakira purported to be in the Bahamas from 2012 to 2014 but was in Spain.

Shakira has disputed the charges since they surfaced, according to E! News.

According to her team, "Shakira has always paid taxes in every country she worked in, including 2011-2014.

When Shakira learned of the possible tax violation, she paid them back, the site reported.

The artist paid back her debts, but a judge found "sufficient evidence of criminality," prompting a 2021 trial, according to AP News.

Shakira risked prison after the trial. According to NPR, prosecutors wanted an eight-year prison sentence and a fine for the musician.

What could have been a lengthy legal battle ended in 10 minutes. Court appearance saved Shakira from jail.
